About Me

Hampshire, United Kingdom
Hi I'm Louise and I've been working with children for over 8 years! Having working in a private day nursery for 6years and now currently working as a Nanny for two families per week. I have been a Nanny since September 2010. I love being able to provide the children in my care a range of different play based activities which they may otherwise never get to experience . I also try to ensure that whilst having fun they're learning important skills to help promote their development and life skills.

Introducing Numbers and Letters

Number Collage

Playdough birthday cakes with number candles

This activity was created by following the child's lead. I originally set up some home-made Playdough with some plastic knifes and forks to allow the child to simply explore the dough.

Whilst exploring the Playdough we used our imaginations to create different things e.g. rolling sausages then cutting them, making round biscuits and even a ice cream or two. So I thought about how to extend this to make the imagination go that bit further and added some cake cases.
Before you knew it we were filling all the cases with balls or Playdough and creating "cakes" and singing "happy birthday to you".
This is when I remembered I had some number shaped candles lurking about in one of the kitchen draws, so I quickly ran to get them and pressed them into the "birthday cakes" and said the correct number as I did.

"Mr 2yrs" soon recognised I was using numbers and tried to copy and name the numbers himself, he then continues to make more cakes and sing as loud as he could, once the song finished he would point to the numbers and try to work out which was which number - he did need correcting but soon discovered that if he pointed to the same one then he would be right by saying "umm 6"

A great visual activities for early numbers.

Number Monsters

I wanted to create a way of displaying numbers for recognition but in a way to catch the children's interest.
One of our much loved and talked about themes is Monsters!
So I drew these simple Jelly bean monsters and drew a number on their tummies,
The children helped me to colour them in.
We have now displayed our Number Monsters and have been very quickly recognising and "reading" the numbers too.

Number Hunts

To help children to recognise and read NUMBERS why not go on a number hunt.
First great some simple number cards from 1 - 10 by drawing the numbers in individual pieces of card,
Then get the children to help to decorate them.
Hide them around the house/garden and get the children to find them
and see if they can recognise which number it is,
once all the numbers have been found encourage them to
put the numbers in the correct order.

Early Phonics

Jolly Phonics - Phase 1

s, a, t, i, p, n

I wanted to start teaching Jolly Phonics to those in my care but in a fun way, so I used a tray full of coloured rice as a base to start the fun learning, then printed off the letter S in different texts and laminated them.
I also printed and laminated pictures of things which began with the "S" sound too and hid them amongst the rice, as the children explored the rice they soon discovered the pictures and letters and were asking "what's this?". With the help of Jolly Phonics we used the "S" sound and actions to then say
the names of the pictures which were discovered too.
